Monday Morning Surf Club!

21 . 01 . 25

Wow, what a morning, probably the biggest we will ever surf at Porthtowan beach…

If you have been on social media in the past few weeks and you have a vague interest in surfing, you no doubt would have seen videos/pics of the UK swell that seems to have lasted for most of January. Well it really has been awesome, plenty of size and perfect wind to keep all the north coast spots firing.

Porthtowan classically does not deal well with swells over a certain size, as it struggles to convert pulses into waves that have a rideable shape and that are realistically catchable, usually we would pop round the corner for a body surf off the harbour wall, or head to a couple of spots down the coast that can cope with chunky surf.

For some reason, standing by the van looking out on the stacks of whitewater, we thought it may be surfable, with a couple of corners visible amongst the chaos. After almost second guessing ourselves we braved the paddle out, which ended up being pretty brutal.

Once out back it was clear that it was about as big as we had ever seen it, the waves we doubling up in size and proved difficult to paddle in to, being held in the lip, before lurching forwards, breaking steeply and then either backing off or closing out.

Chris, James and Matt all put in a stellar effort trying their best to tame the untamable, it was impossible to predict where waves would break or suddenly jack up, with very few corners to be had and constantly dodging outer sets.

We ended up being pretty stoked to have given it a go, hopefully the footage does it justice!

James was surfing his 5’10 Fetch wooden surfboard – not ideal for the conditions as he found out…

Chris was surfing his 6’8 Riser wooden surfboard.

Matt was surfing his 6’4 Woodburner wooden surfboard.

See you next week!

All of our sustainable, hollow wooden surfboards are made using wood from local, regenerative woodlands, and are intended for a lifetime of waves.
