Wooden Surfboard Pickup: Matt

Towards the end of last year Matt popped by to pick up the wooden surfboard he made with us…

Since stumbling across our workshop during a visit to the Mount Pleasant Eco Park, local surfer Matt got to know us in and out of the water, with the intention of making his own wooden surfboard, the question was, which shape to make?!

After discussing various mid-length options and looking through our board-rack, taking into account local surf spots and typical conditions, Matt chose to make a 6’4 Woodburner.

A self professed beginner when it comes to woodwork, Matt said he enjoyed getting to grips with the shaping tools and watching as the board transformed beneath each pass of the plane, you can check out a video of how he got on below.

After 5 days Matt had made himself his very own wooden surfboard, leaving his freshly stamped masterpiece resting on the trestles, the board then went up to our finishers for glassing.

Several weeks later and the Woodburner was back with us, ready for the waves, after waxing up we joined Matt on his very first surf at the beach in Porthtowan.

Matt has since joined us for some Monday Morning Surf Club sessions, and we are loving to see first hand at how he is getting on with the wooden surfboard he made himself!

All of our sustainable, hollow wooden surfboards are made using wood from local, regenerative woodlands and are intended for a lifetime of waves.
