‘Made to Last a Lifetime’

Yes it’s our tagline, but what is the actual longevity of our surfboards?

We were sent the above video a few days ago from father and son Peter and Mike, who are keen surfers from Guernsey and made surfboards with us back in 2017.

Peter made the 6’4 Woodburner featured in this clip, and after surfing it regularly over most of the last decade, stripped off the wax in preparation for a trip to warmer waves this summer.

It’s a prime example of how our surfboards are made to last which is a core value to us as a company, and as environmentally conscious individuals.

Reacting against common, toxic and fragile foam surfboards, James started Otter Surfboards with the aim of making surfboards that are sustainable in as many ways as possible. From the local sourcing of timber from regenerative woodlands to the construction of strong skin and frame designs.

Below you can see examples of our personal surfboards, pictures taken when they were freshly made back in 2015 and 2017 respectively, and snaps from our June 2025 Monday morning surfs showing the boards still going strong.

For us, the news of one of our surfboards standing the tests of time and regular waves, is not surprising – as it is very much in the forefront of our minds when making them.

But to hear from a satisfied customer nearly 10 years later, with a nearly ‘good as new’ Otter surfboard, is incredibly heartening and motivating!

If you have any questions about getting your hands on one of our sustainable, hollow wooden surfboards, please feel free to get in touch.
