Saturday Making: Bodysurfing Handplanes

02 . 10 . 24

Every month or so we open our big blue doors to folks wanting to make their own bodysurfing handplane

We were stoked to welcome Julien, Anna and Kieron to our workshop a few weeks back, and as the sun streamed in, pre-prepared hand plane blanks were handed out and templates pondered.

Shapes to choose from included, the Bob, Crescent, Diamond, Rounded Pin and Pebble.

Once everyone decided what design they wanted, they were marked out in pencil before being cut by hand, using Japanese Pull Saws. Tidying of the outlines was done using Saw Rasps, bringing out the final shape before rounding over the rails, nose and tails.

Stopping for lunch we all enjoyed delicious pasties from just down the road!

Then it was onto the final shaping of the underside of the noses and lots of sanding to bring the fresh new wooden handplanes to life.

All that was left to do in the coming days for our workshoppers, was to add a few coats of oil to their handiwork, in readiness to jump in the ocean and slide along some shorebreak!
