Where Does Your Money Go When You Buy A Wooden Surfboard Workshop?

10 . 01 . 23

When considering the purchase of a 5 day workshop experience there is a lot to think about, especially the cost – so here, we break down the price of a typical surfboard under 7′, so you know what you are getting for your money…

Our 5 day surfboard workshops currently start at £2,950.00

The first cost to consider is wood: £130.00

All of our wooden surfboards are made from the planks that rest just outside our workshop doors.

Before a workshop can begin, we process planks to make the pieces of the surfboards, such as the skins, rail strips and nose and tail blocks. This usually takes 3 days: £450.00

During a workshop the first 3 days are spent making a blank, this involves a fair bit of glue: £50.00

Disposables such as rubber gloves, sandpaper and dust masks: £15.00.

5 days expert tuition with James and team, who have taught over 200 people how to make their own wooden surfboards: £750.00

Running costs of the workshop for 80 hours, including electricity, insurance etc: £540

The finishing of our surfboards, which includes the glassing, fin box installation etc: £520.00

We add 20% VAT: £491.00

Total: £2,946.00

And there you have it, a breakdown of how your money gets spent on a 5 day wooden surfboard making workshop with Otter Surfboards. As you can see, we break even when there is one attendee, and only make a profit margin when there are 2 or more workshoppers for the week.

We often get asked about our process, so hopefully you have found this helpful.
