Wooden Surfboard Focus: The 7’4 Island Hopper

A workshop favourite and the perfect surfboard for this time of year, here’s everything you need to know!

A high volume, egg shaped, mid-length  – The Island Hopper is a popular shape among folks who join us to make their own wooden surfboard, and also for those of us who have had the pleasure of testing it.

At 7’4” long and 23” wide, the Island Hopper is both a great “step-down” board for longboarders as well as an appealing board for surfers looking to inject some fun cruising back into their game. A great mid-length shape, this board is a true all-rounder ideal for “one board” quivers and international travel and was developed for an early customer from the Channel Islands.

Suitable for both beginners and seasoned surfers, the Island Hopper goes well in a range of conditions, due to it’s high volume, working well in slack summer waves as well as sitting nicely in the pocket on more critical sections.

Since we released the Island Hopper in 2012, it has been an incredibly popular choice for our beginner and intermediate customers, not only because it’s likely to catch you a lot of waves, but also because it’s the kind of surfboard you can jump back easily on after a couple of months out of the surf.

With its full template, full rails and high volume, this board is all about catching waves and making the most of any wave conditions. We originally designed it to be a versatile board that we’d be happy to surf anywhere and that has proved to be true over the years.

All of our wooden surfboards are made using sustainable wood from local, regenerative woodlands, for a lifetime of waves.
