Wooden Surfboard Profile No 9: Laurie

Laurie made a 9’1 Wicket with us last year, and we recently reached out to him for his reflections on the workshop experience and how the board is going…

“My most memorable moment is going from the apprehension and cluelessness felt on the first day to stamping my beautiful handmade board on the last day and knowing that (with a little help) I had made this. I couldn’t have felt prouder.

It felt like a week like no other! I felt both really engaged and focused on applying what I was learning, but it was also incredibly calming and connecting to be able to work with your hands the whole time and not worry about the stresses of a normal working day. It made me realise we’re all meant to disconnect from our digital existence every now and then and ‘do’ more.

The team were on hand every step of the way, explaining why we were doing certain things, the techniques to achieve them and to lend a helping hand when you were struggling. The Wednesday evening and lunchtime breaks were also a nice opportunity to get to know everyone more.”

“The board is amazing! While it looks fantastic and could quite easily sit in the house, I was determined to surf it as much as I can, and its a real joy to surf. Its smooth and fast, and the weight and flex of the wood allows you to feel really connected through the wave. Plus I always get a lot of people asking about it in the water or on the beach! When its not being used its mounted on the wall back at home – both functional and art! No pictures of me on it yet but hopefully get some soon!”
