Here’s Ben to tell you how he got on when he joined us to make his own hollow wooden surfboard…
Joining us from an hour up the coast here in Corwall, Ben – a self confessed non-surfer, had decided to make a wooden surfboard as part woodwork project, part inspiration to take up surfing.
Choosing a 7’4 Island Hopper for it’s classic shape and adventurous sounding name, Ben wanted a surfboard that is ideal for beginners in terms of catching waves easily, but also for enabling progression a little further down the line with turns and riding advanced level waves.
Always one to embrace a project, Ben took well to learning the tools and techniques through each stage of the making process. From day one piecing together the internal framework, to building rails using thin strips of wood and shaping the blank to it’s finished dimensions using saw’s, rasps and planes.
