“We very nearly spent the week sleeping on a boat off the south coast, but unfortunately it was sold just a few weeks ago” Tim replied when asked where he would be staying this week whilst building a 9’4″ Seasaw with us. As it is, he is camping with his family above Gwithian Beach and cycling the coast road along to our workshops at Krowji in the grounds of the old Redruth Grammar School each day, leaving his wife and five year old twins to enjoy the beach each day.
Over the course of the past five days Tim has taken a sheet of poplar plywood (our new favourite, sustainably sourced from Spain so it doesn’t have to travel so far to get to us) with the framework for his surfboard machine cut into it and the deck and bottom skins of western red cedar with poplar and walnut accent strips, and grown his 9’4″ longboard on the set of trestles nearest the outside door, enjoying the cool summer breeze as he’s worked. We took the timber for the deck and bottom panels from two different planks of western red cedar of different tones and the result is a wonderfully striped board. Right now Tim is finish sanding his creation, ready to sign his name on the bottom, and then we’re heading off for a celebratory meal.
