This week’s workshopper profile is all about Rachel, who joined us back in October 2020 to make her own wooden surfboard. Check out her story below!
Rachel is a GP living in Falmouth, Cornwall, a keen surfer and sailer she joined us for the week to make a 9’1 Wicket.
Rachel had originally planned to add some colour to her finished board using a dying technique, so she asked us for her wood layup to feature as few knots as possible so as to have a clean/blank canvas for her creative ideas. Unfortunately after experimenting with some offcuts of wood and various techniques, she decided against the idea. Luckily the grain patterns and plain cedar wood lay-up made for a truly stunning finish and was an art work in itself! It is not often we are lucky enough to work with such clean planks when making our surfboards, especially boards over 7′, making this particular Wicket very special.
We recently caught up with Rachel at our AGM in September, where we enjoyed a windy surf at Gwithan beach and a meal in the barn opposite our workshop. Looking back at her experience making a wooden surfboard with us, Rachel had this to say:
‘A great Journey you will probably travel further than you think. Not to be out done by that secret moment when you paddle out on something you have made, smiling away to yourself in slight disbelief that it actually floats.’ Rachel – September 2022
