So its the end of another crazy year, and pandemic aside, we have actually had a pretty good one! We feel really lucky to have had such a busy time coming out of lock down, and we thought we’d share our highlights…
Our year pretty much started in March with the birth of James’s second child Olivia, we welcomed her into the Otter family in style with the obligatory picture in front of our big blue doors.
April saw the birth of Monday Morning Surf Club, a great idea of ours to motivate the team to get in the sea every Monday without fail. Read more about it here.
May saw us featured in the Times and The Telegraph. We were so stoked to be in national press, and had loads of messages of support which was awesome!
In June we launched our new website after many months of planning, a big deal to put ourselves out there in a way we feel really represents us.
July was flat as a pancake here in Cornwall, so we made the most of the sunshine and tried to get as many lunchtime swims in as possible. An unexpected wave at the bottom of the hill led to a spontaneous body board session, read more about it here.
Our first paddleboard workshop of the year came in August. We had such a fun week getting to know Henry and helping him to shape a beautiful skiff paddleboard! Read more about the week here.
September is usually when we have our Annual Gathering or Makers. Given the situation this year with the pandemic we didn’t feel able to plan a big event. So a local crew of workshoppers met up at the beach for a surf and a catch up to mark the occasion.
October saw some storms roll in bringing some heavy waves to our little beach, we made the most of it and managed to squeeze in as much bodysurfing as we could. Here’s Chris on a particularly serious one!
In November we were invited up to the London Surf Film Festival, where one of our videos had made the shortlist for the shorties competition. It was amazing to see the clip on the big screen, and great to be a part of such an awesome event. Watch the clip here.
One reason for all the busyness this year was because we had a back log of workshoppers, after having to cancel courses due to various lockdowns. So once we opened our doors in April we were in full flow, preparing for and running courses for people to come and make their own wooden surfboards.
Everyone who walked though our big blue doors has made this year one to remember, the workshop has been filled with new friendships, laughter, community and the sound of new wave craft coming to life!
If you would like to join us on a workshop course next year click here for more info…
Rolling up to the beach to see a calm sea and one other surfer out, we had no idea we were about to luck into some lovely little peelers...
A lumpy low tide mush fest, complete with dumpy close out barrels...
