David, Laurie and David’s Wooden Surfboard Workshop Experience

26 . 04 . 23

Last week we were joined by 3 new workshopper’s who came to make their own wooden surfboards, see here how they got on…

We were blessed with a week of sunshine and waves, so it was a great time for David, Laurie and David to be in our workshop, up the hill from the beach in beautiful Porthtowan, Cornwall.

David H joined us from Norway, making a 9’4 Seasaw, as he wanted as much board as possible to practice shaping on – since having already tried his hand at making some wooden surfboards back in his home country. A carpenter and keen woodsman by trade, David settled into the making process well, happily learning our methods and steps in the building and shaping stages. David had discovered Otter Surfboards on the internet after searching how to make wooden surfboards, and he had been excited to make the trip over to the UK, which prompted some governors in his home town to help him fund the journey, a great way to support learning and surfing!

Laurie joined us from Leamington Spa, where he works in marketing. He had been bought the workshop experience as a gift for his 30th birthday by his parents who live near Polzeath. A keen surfer since the age of 14, and a lover of the cruisey, drawn out style of surfing, Laurie predominantly surfs longboards and will be adding his 9’1 Wicket to his quiver. Laurie spoke of one day hoping to move down to Cornwall, after visiting frequently over the years, and we hope this experience helped to convince him!

David B joined us from Worthing, where our Chris is also from, sparking a few conversations about home breaks and local surf culture. David made a 6’2 Swift after seeing James with it in a video earlier in the year, a keen kite-surfer he planned to use it for both kiting and surfing, since stepping down from mini-mals in a bid to further improve his surfing.

David, Laurie and David all planned to surf together once they have picked up their boards from us, after they are glassed. We can’t wait to have them all back and join them in the sea!
