A couple of weeks back we ran our very first handplane workshop at The Wave, then we all jumped in for a bodysurf! Read here all about how the day unfolded…
To be invited to run a handplane workshop at the wave for us was a dream come true. Not only did we have the opportunity to take our workshop on the road, but we were in the perfect setting to make handplanes – within sight of perfect waves, breaking just outside the back windows. And the added bonus of being able to jump in and bodysurf with everyone at the end!
11 new workshoppers joined us for the day to make their own bodysurfing handplanes, and after introductions, coffee and choosing templates, they set to the task of sawing and rasping the outlines to create the rough shapes that would excitingly become fresh new wave-craft.
After a tasty lunch at the onsite cafe and watching a few glassy waves roll through, everyone began rounding over and shaping the rails of their handplanes, with Chris and James providing their expertise and guiding the making, ensuring that each workshopper was happy with their progress.
Following an all over sand and final touches, we arranged to meet outside, ready to experience the excitement and energy that only bodysurfing can bring!
It was an amazing day to be part of, surrounded by the sights, sounds and joy of a new group of people making handplanes out of wood, followed by the pure stoke of bodysurfing – the perfect way to wash the sawdust off!
Thanks to The Wave and to everyone who came along, we hope these waves were the first of many. Enjoy your new bodysurfing handplanes!
