A couple of weeks ago Ivo joined one of our guided workshop courses to make his own wooden surfboard…
Ivo joined us all the way from Italy where he works as a helicopter rescue pilot, but it’s his love of surfing that brought him to Cornwall and to our workshop at the top of the hill in Porthtowan.
For the past 20+ years Ivo has surfer all over the world, and after seeing us on Instagram, finding out about our make your own surfboard workshops, decided to treat himself for his 46th birthday and spend 5 days with us.
Not having much woodwork experience, Ivo embraced the challenge of learning to use our selection of planing tools and following the creation of his hollow wooden blank, he then took to the task of shaping the 7’2 Coaster.
Ivo chose this particular shape for the occasional surf trip, and for waves closer to home, intending for the volume to allow for more waves to be caught, and to offer greater paddlability than a standard shortboard.
During the week Ivo had a couple of chances to take James’s Coaster for a surf at a local spot, and he couldn’t have been more complimentary about how it performed, convinced he had made the perfect selection of what to make!
Now his fresh new wooden surfboard will be taken up to our friend Paul at Fluin Glassing to be expertly finished and readied for Ivo to return, collect and surf his handiwork!
