Jonathan’s Wooden Surfboard

Towards the end of last year Jonathan joined us for 5 days of making, and last week he popped in to collect his handiwork…

Jonathan found us after googling wooden surfboards, and had been stoked to find out that he could join us to make his own. Joining us for 5 days, under James’s expert guidance, he learned how to use our rasps, planes and saws and the process of making a hollow, wooden surfboard.

Each day brought with it a new set of tasks, new skills to learn as the 9’1 Wicket longboard took shape on the trestles. Jonathan chose to make the Wicket so he could add a sustainable longboard to his quiver, and have the option of a larger surfboard for smaller, choppy conditions which we often find during summer in the UK.

After putting together the internal frame, glueing it to the bottom skin and building up the rails to create the blank, Jonathan then spent the next couple of days shaping, coaxing out the final form of the nose, tail and rails, and enjoying watching all his hard work come together.

Following the final sand, stamping and signing, the surfboard remained with us on the trestles before being taken up to our friend Paul for the finishing.

A couple of months later and Jonathan made his way back to our workshop, just up the hill from the beach, and through our big blue doors to be reunited with his surfboard, we can’t wait to hear about the first few surfs as the Wicket begins its lifetime of waves!
