One Focus: Five Days Making a Wooden Surfboard

06 . 11 . 26

Henry joined us recently for five days of making, here’s how he got on…

Henry joined us to make a 6’2” Swift, a performance oriented board chosen for it’s maneuverability, wave-catching ability and the fact that Henry is keen to progress his surfing towards tighter turns and carves.

After slotting together and fixing down the internal frame on Monday, Henry spent the next two days building up the rails of the surfboard, adding nose and tail blocks and preparing for the top skin to close over the inside of the board.

Next came shaping, using the handplanes and rasps, getting to know the techniques and tools following James’s expert guidance.

More intricate shaping along the rails and the underside of the surfboard followed, then sanding to a finish before stamping and signing off!

All of our sustainable, hollow wooden surfboards are made using wood from local, regenerative woodlands and are intended for a lifetime of waves. Custom made or make your own.
