Last week we welcomed 3 new workshoppers through our big blue doors…
Steve, Arthur and Sophia joined us for the week to make their own wooden surfboards.
Steve joined us from Yorkshire and had driven down early on Monday morning, leaving at 4am, needless to say he was grateful for a coffee on his arrival to the workshop! Steve would be making a 9’1’’ Wicket, a longboard he had chosen with its manoeuvrability in mind. During the week Steve spoke of his love for surfing, how he had surfed in Pembrokeshire throughout his adolescence and then in various places around the world.
Like a lot of our workshoppers Steve had been looking forward to having the chance to take some time out from work, and immerse himself in something completely different from his day to day life, to see what would come from the experience. The surfboard would be a bonus! Steve really embraced every part of the making and it was awesome to see him approach the process with such excitement and dedication.
Next to Steve on the second and third trestles were Arthur and Sophia. A couple from Germany, they had travelled to the UK in a landrover with a roof tent, and would be spending the nights at various wild camping spots on the coast path. Both keen kite surfers they weren’t worried about the lack of good surf, and they spent their evenings kiting at local beaches, really making the most of the long days and their first trip to Cornwall.
The trip had been booked as a surprise by Arthur’s father as a 30th birthday gift, so it was fun to be a part of the experience, as they both explored the making process which they took to well, sharing Steve’s energy and enthusiasm.
Sophia made a 6’2” Swift, a good board for catching waves and progressing with turns, which she had chosen to suit her height and ability. Arthur made a 6’10’’ Jetty, an egg style shape he had chosen so he could surf a range of different conditions, that he would be travelling to from the couple’s home in Berlin. We hope at least one of the trips will be back to visit us!
We had a great week with Steve, Arthur and Sophia, there were awesome vibes in the workshop throughout, and relaxed, fun times, exploring the local area’s beautiful scenery, eating good food, and enjoying plenty of laughs and conversations in between.
We can’t wait to welcome you all back to collect your freshly glassed wooden surfboards!
