The Big Screen in The Big Smoke

04 . 11 . 13

Well we’re back on our favourite side of the Tamar now, home in Cornwall after another great weekend up in the big smoke.  Apologies if you were expecting this blog on Friday evening but time ran away from us a bit as we were all caught up in the festivities at the third annual London Surf Film Festival and preparing for our handplane-shaping workshop at the Patagonia London store on Saturday.

We took along two of our surfboards; the recently finished Seadar, our mini-simmons model, the first board of which has been documented as a project by our friend Gary Moger and also the lovely-looking Island Hopper that Kingsley recently shaped with us on a “Build-Your-Own” week in September.  We were exhibiting in the Approaching Lines room, which this year has grown into a bigger space on the ground floor of Riverside Studios.  There was a great turn out again this year with most of the screenings selling out – and rightly so, because there were some excellent films being premiered at the festival.    Amongst our favourites were the excellent Fortune Wild and Bella Vita.  It was also nice to see some wooden surfboards by Paul Jensen and Tom Wegener celebrated in Nathan Oldfield’s “The Heart & The Sea” which screened on Sunday evening.

In the midst of all of this we had a very special event hosted by our great friends at the Patagonia Store in Covent Garden.  We arrived on Saturday morning with a big bag of saws, surforms and most importantly, some handplane blanks to run a “Build-Your-Own” handplane workshop.  We had a crew of eight people making a lovely pile of sawdust in the store through Saturday, and all of them left with their very own bodysurfing handplane ready to swim into a few waves. More details of our day will be following in our next blog post on Friday.

It was a lovely few days up in London.  We caught up with some old friends, made some new ones, watched some great surf movies on the big screen and enjoyed sharing the joys of woodwork and bodysurfing with the crew at Patagonia on Saturday.  Thanks to everybody who made it such a special weekend for us, we hope to see you all in Cornwall very soon.
