Wooden Surfboard Workshopper Profiles: Tony

17 . 10 . 25

Not many folks know that James’s Favourite surfboard, the 9’1 Wicket that features in a lot of our surf footage, was actually made nearly 10 years ago by our good friend Tony…

The above pictures show the 9’1 Wicket during a stage in the making process back in Spring 2016 when Tony joined one of our workshop experiences, and last weekend (11/10/25) during our Annual Gathering of Makers where Tony was reunited with the surfboard for a special surf with a crew of former workshoppers.

This not only speaks to the special connection we have with folks (from over the past 15 years) who have joined us for a week of making, but also the longevity of the surfboards: this particular one being surfed on a weekly basis by James – who is only too happy looking after the Wicket for Tony, for when he visits us on the North Coast of Cornwall.

Also a keen bellyboard enthusiast, going by the alias “Belly Slater”, Tony is always keen to get in the sea and provide great energy and stoke for whatever session is about to occur, we love his visits!

Here’s a few words from the man himself:

“Back in 2016 I had a big decision to make. I was fortunate enough to be in the possession of an Otter handplane and bellyboard, the big questions now was: ‘which surfboard do I make myself?’

The only answer for me was the 9’1 Wicket longboard.

I began my build journey with James and followed the process all the way through from making the decks, rails and frame through to shaping and sign off.

I first got in the water with my Wicket nearly 10 years ago and it has performed impeccably since that time.

To me it’s more than a surfboard, it’s a connection to the place, the person and the sea. It might just be the last surfboard I ever buy.”
