Wooden Wave-Craft Making on a Saturday

17 . 12 . 25

Every month or so folks join us for the day,  to make a bodysurfing handplane or a bellyboard…

Stuart, Thomas, Indy and Luc all joined us for the day to make wooden bodysurfing handplanes!

After choosing/designing and marking out their desired shapes on the concave blanks provided, they set about sawing the rough outline and rasping to smooth and round over the edges.

It’s a great opportunity to use the variety of planing and cutting tools from our tool wall, the same tools we use to make all of our wave-craft including bellyboards, surfboards and paddleboards. Many of the techniques are also similar and easy to learn regardless of woodworking ability/experience.

After a pasty lunch, the handplanes were then shaped and sanded to a finish – ready for the first coat of oil.

After a second coat they will be ready for the waves!

All of our sustainable, wooden wave-craft are made using wood from local, regenerative woodlands and are intended for a lifetime of waves. Custom made or make your own.
