We are so honoured to announce that two of our surfboard projects, The Storyboard and our One Tree collaboration with The National Trust, have been shortlisted for this year’s Wood Awards in the Production Made Furniture category.
The Wood Awards is the most respected award for building and designing in wood, and each year celebrates architecture and furniture practices that puts the world’s most sustainable material to best use. Starting in 1971 as the Carpenter’s Award, and relaunching in 2003 in it’s current incarnation, the Wood Awards have become a mark of excellence within the industry and celebrate the use of wood and wood products across seven categories: commercial and public access architecture, private architecture, structural use, repair and adaptive reuse, small project, production made furniture and bespoke furniture. We are extremely proud to be on the shortlist of 30 entrants from a starting total of 318, and are one of just 3 companies who have been shortlisted for more than one project.
Referring to the high number of architectural entries in the awards, David Hopkins, head of communications and external affairs for major sponsor Wood for Good, said,
“Looking through the entries for this year’s Wood Awards, it is hard not to be struck by the impact that the timber industry is having on the face of urban architecture throughout the UK. Timber is carving itself an ever larger niche in the construction market and one factor which is repeated throughout the entries is sustainability. Timber is finally being recognised as a solution to achieving affordable, low-carbon urban development goals.”
We hope that our use of wood to achieve greater sustainability in surfboard production helps us to catch the interest of the judging panel.
The Wood Awards 2013 shortlist will be showcased for the first time at 100% Design in London from 18-21 September, and at Timber Expo, now at the NEC in Birmingham from 24-25 September, before the category winners and the Gold Award winner being announced at a reception hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters in London on the 19th of November. Fingers crossed!
