Bob, Bob and Burt’s Wooden Surfboard Workshop Experience

22 . 06 . 22

At the start of June we were joined in our workshop by Bob, Bob and Burt. Good friends for the last 20 years, they usually meet up for surf trips abroad, but this time they decided to come to Porthtowan and make their own wooden surfboards…

Bob joined us from New Jersey in the USA, a keen surfer throughout his adult life he has travelled to many destinations over the years, including Costa Rica where he first met Bob (UK) and Burt. Bob made a 7’4’’ Island Hopper, a board he hoped to use during summer swells back home, to allow easy access into smaller, more mellow waves.

Burt and Bob (UK) joined us from Nottingham where they both work for Games Workshop. Burt had decided to use his 50th Birthday as an occasion to plan a trip to Cornwall, and having followed us on social media for the past few years, he wanted to plan a surf trip with a difference, with two of his mates making wooden surfboards!

Bob (UK) made a 7’2’’ Coaster, a board to suit various conditions as he planned to travel a lot in retirement. Burt made a 6’2” Swift, a board that will sit somewhere in between a similar size shortboard and a fish he already has in foam form.

The weather throughout the week was glorious blue sky and sunshine, and there was even a few waves to be had, which is almost unheard of for a workshop week. Bob, Bob and Burt fully embraced their trip, heading to local beaches to surf before and after full days of making, we were well impressed!

It felt really special to be a part of this particular trip, as the last time they had all met up was 7 years ago, it was inspiring to hear the story of how they have all stayed in touch and had always planned to surf together again.

We hope the next one is back down to see us, to get their freshly made wooden surfboards in the water!
