Sustainable Wooden Surfboard Shapes: The 6’2 Swift

01 . 04 . 25

A relatively new shape in the Otter Surfboards range, the 6’2 Swift is fast becoming a favorite…

6’2 x 21 1/2” x 2 7/8” – 41.3 l

A 6’2” hybrid, the Swift has been designed to balance easy paddling and wave catching ability with manoeuvrability for more progressive surfing. With a modern rocker line and more pinched rails, this surfboard turns well and with a high degree of control. It has a more rounded outline than our traditional fish models with those turns in mind, but without sacrificing speed. The Swift features a swallowtail so that a wider tail pod is possible without losing hold through turns. We think it looks more like the tail of a swift, so this travel board named itself.

We wanted to have a surfboard in our range that blends the elements of high performance seen in the APDT, with a friendlier size and volume for the intermediate surfers who want to push their surfing forwards.

A real hybrid that fills the gap between our fish shapes and a typical ‘shortboard’, with the wide point just forward of centre, we have a brilliantly balanced surfboard that paddles quickly and allows you to surf off the tail too.

It was our good friend Luca who originally broached the concept of the Swift, we then created the design and offered him the chance to come and make one, which featured a unique layup of Luca’s choosing.

After shaping a few custom Swifts and taking Luca through his experience, we began to offer the shape as an option for folks who join our ‘make your own’ surfboard workshops. It’s a surfboard which is popular for good reason, enough volume to get you into waves like a fish, with the performance of a shortboard.

Here are the experiences of a few folks who have made them:
