Wooden Surfboard Workshopper Profiles (No.5): Hugo

08 . 08 . 23

Hugo made a wooden surfboard with us back in 2019, and we have had the pleasure of working with him on a few other awesome projects over the years…

Hugo joined us to make a 7’2 Coaster, here’s what he said about the week:

“One of my favourite ever experiences making my wooden surfboard with the one and only James otter in 2019 a highlight in what was a crazy challenging and exhausting year. The process was so special and riding the board equally so amazing.

Having made a beautiful surfboard with James, I can safely say that it was one of the most nourishing and rewarding experiences I’ve had. As a ‘busy’ person, the time and space it gave me was incredible, and the energy I got from challenging myself to learn something new was brilliant. And surfing the board adds to the experience and meaning of the process.”

We first got to know Hugo through his role as CEO at Surfers Against Sewage, an organisation close to our hearts, and workshop, just around the corner in sunny St Agnes. We have been collaborating with SAS since 2011 when they raffled off an Otter Surfboard at a fundraising event.

Hugo and SAS have always been amazing ambassadors of ours, and we have been lucky enough to collaborate on some truly amazing projects over the years, including:

The Ben Wood Go Project – 2014

Ocean Lectures – 2015

Interview – 2016

Ocean Plastic Solutions Day Bellyboard – 2018

Royal Wedding Bellyboard – 2019

30 Years of SAS Surfboard – 2020

Since leaving his position at SAS, Hugo has taken on the Executive Director role at Oceana UK.

We are honoured to have such a good relationship with someone who care’s about the Ocean as much as we do!
